Happy Thanksgiving! The Summer Savory crop is in!

Here in the beautiful Annapollis Valley we are pleased to be growing excellent Summer Savory and using it to create the "flavors of the Maritimes in our spice mixes!

My parents came from Holland in 1958 and started farming here on this farm in 1960. Farmer John' Herbs has evolved and today we have three generations of family working together. We have been wonderfully supported by the public and the grocery stores of the region. Our goal is to bring you "the flavours of the Maritimes" through our summer savory and many spice mixes. We are a certified organic processor and use mostly organic herbs in our spice mixes.

We are always working on new projects and are proud to announce a line of 6 new tea products! Old world and modern flavours are combined in inventive and enjoyable herbal teas using Summer Savory.

We hope that you enjoy our many products and that you share with us your comments and opinions. Many of our current products have come from customer suggestions. Feel free to stop by!

P.S. Here's the recipe that started it all. My wife, Heather, a Newfoundlander, grew up with this recipe. It's a traditional Stuffing recipe using bread and Summer Savory.

Farmer John’s Herbs Recipe Traditional Stuffing

(Yield: enough to stuff a chicken, double recipe for a turkey)

1/4 cup, (60 g) butter

1/4 cup (125 ml) chopped onions

1/4 cup (125 ml) chopped celery

2 Tablespoons (9 g) Summer Savory

1/2 Tsp (2 ml) Salt

½ Tsp (2 ml) Black Pepper

4 cups (400 g) dried bread, cubed

In a large frying pan, melt butter over a medium heat. Sauté onions, celery, summer savory, salt and pepper until tender. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl. Add the bread and mix well. Stuff the turkey/chicken at both ends with the mixture immediately before cooking. Do not stuff and allow the turkey to sit around.
